Do you remember your first best friend?  I met mine on the first day of Kindergarten.  Mrs. Coakley's classroom had a big tin dollhouse with painted on shutters and pink roses.  It was exquisitely outfitted with modern furniture (what would be deemed "retro" now) including a miniature toilet with moveable lids.  I'd never seen anything like it.  My future best friend talked me into sticking my finger in the bowl and swirling it around.  "Thanks for cleaning my toilet bowl!" she said.  She was the coolest!

Not long after that my parents started moving every few years.  Between 2nd grade and 10th grade I attended thirteen different schools.  Eventually I lost the ability to make friends.  I was always "the new kid", the Square Peg.  School was an absolute misery.   Unless circumstance forces interaction with other people, the likelihood of meeting your BFF as an adult is·left up to chance.· The days of bonding over dollhouses·are over unless you're lucky enough to live in a metropolitan area teeming with different cultures, and a vast palette of activities and events from which to choose· While Chesterfield County is growing by leaps and bounds, we're still not there on the "things to do" scale.
